"In order to write cattle back into the agricultural and socio-economic history of (rural) Africa, and Africa into the global history of cattle, CATTLEFRONTIERS offers an empirically and conceptually innovative history of cattle production in Africa."

The biological frontier addresses the production and circulation, adaptation and use, neglect and contestation of veterinary knowledge and technologies to improve the health and physical constitution of cattle.

The mental frontier explores colonial policies aimed to transform the minds and commercial practices of African pastoralists and turn them into ‘progressive’ and market-oriented entrepreneurs.

The socio-ecological frontier analyses how new modes of animal husbandry were introduced to raise productivity, for both African pastoralists and white settlers, affecting land use, environment and labour relations.

The commercial frontier examines how cattle were turned into various commodities and traded for consumption in different local, regional, imperial and global markets.
